Reshaping the Junior Badminton Landscape
Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) has announced an exciting overhaul of their junior development programs from Term 4 2023. Focussed on inclusivity, skill development, and player engagement, ABA aims to cultivate a new generation of badminton athletes and unleash the potential of young players through a tiered system designed to cater to various skill levels and aspirations.
Where the Journey Begins: "Boys Smash It" and "Girls Smash It"
At the heart of the association's approach to nurturing young badminton players are the separate "Boys and Girls Smash It" programs. Building on the successful “Just Smash It” program, these new entry-level initiatives offer a lower-price point, ensuring accessibility for all. Separating Boys and Girls allows for the different development of both and follows best practice research to encourage greater female participation. The "Smash It" program ensures that every child can have the opportunity to experience the thrill of badminton. Through a blend of engaging drills, fun games, and interactive sessions, these programs will introduce the fundamental skills required for the sport and provide milestones for parents and players to know when to progress to the next level.
Nurturing Talent: "Shuttle Boys Academy" and "Shuttle Girls Academy"
Once graduated from the Smash It programs players take their badminton journey to the next level with the "Shuttle Boys or Girls Academy" programs. Sitting at the intermediate level, these programs offer focused training and skill development. These Academies provide a comprehensive training experience that hones in on refining techniques, building strategic thinking, and enhancing physical conditioning. Participants will work through advanced drills, and will engage in matches that challenge their abilities and foster growth.
A Remodel That Matters
This strategic overhaul aligns with our purpose to strengthen and grow Badminton in our community. Nurturing beginners and honing intermediate players, we aim to produce well-rounded athletes who not only excel on the court but also carry the values of sportsmanship, dedication, and teamwork throughout their lives.
Players who have honed their talents in the "Shuttle Boys Academy" and "Shuttle Girls Academy" are ideally positioned to make a smooth transition into this more competitive realm of the ABA Junior Representative program, starting with the Yonex Youth Super League where they can test themselves in a fun, competitive and safe environment.
With the introduction of accessible and engaging entry-level programs "Boys and Girls Smash It," coupled with the more intensive training offered by the "Shuttle Boys and Shuttle Girls Academy," ABA is paving the way for a generation of badminton athletes who are not only skilled players but also passionate ambassadors of the sport.
