The Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) is proud to announce that 76-year-old Angus Husin will be representing New Zealand at the prestigious BWF Senior World Championships in Jeonju, Korea.
This momentous event, scheduled to take place from September 11-17, will see Angus Husin competing at the highest level of senior badminton, showcasing his exceptional skills and dedication to the sport. Angus will be playing Men's Singles in the 75-years-old+ category.
Originally from Indonesia, he emigrated to New Zealand in 1974. Angus Husin has had a remarkable journey in the world of badminton that spans over several decades. He is currently a team member of our Auckland Supervets Team 2.
His passion for the sport ignited when he borrowed a racket at the tender age of 10 and discovered his innate talent. Since then, he has been an integral part of the badminton community, starting with the Balmoral Badminton Club in 1975. He swiftly ascended the ranks, representing ABA in inter-association competitions and achieving victory in the Slazenger Cup (Division 2), propelling him to the pinnacle of Division 1.
Reflecting on his journey, Angus Husin advises aspiring junior players in ABA, "Just become a good player ASAP and win a tournament! After winning a tournament, you will be hooked to the game for life." His first taste of success came at the age of 14-years-old when he clinched his first tournament victory.
Angus' dedication to badminton led him to participate in national tournaments for the first time in 1978 in both singles and doubles (with Paul Kennedy as his MD partner). From that point forward, he got to know Otahuhu Badminton Club and enjoy most of his badminton life there.
His remarkable achievements include winning the Singles category in the World Master Games 2017 in Auckland for the 70+ age group, a testament to his enduring passion and skill in the sport.
When asked about his secret to staying active and competitive in badminton at his age, Angus Husin shared, "Just keep healthy and try to play better than anyone else, so you will never stop playing in competitions, as winning is addictive."
Angus has set his sights on a remarkable goal – to win a Gold medal at the BWF Senior World Championships 2023, representing not only himself but also ABA and New Zealand on the global stage.
In addition to his competitive spirit, Angus Husin is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones at the BWF Senior World Championships. He believes that building these friendships will create cherished memories to share with future generations such as his grandchildren.
We extends our wholehearted support to Angus Husin as he embarks on this incredible journey to represent New Zealand at the BWF Senior World Championships. His dedication, passion, and outstanding achievements in the sport are an inspiration to the entire badminton community in Auckland and beyond.
