Press Release: Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Welcomes Auckland Badminton to Ōrākei Marae
Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei warmly welcomed Auckland Badminton (ABA) to Ōrākei Marae, officially recognizing and celebrating the beginning of a meaningful new partnership. This special occasion also honoured the ABA teams selected for the 2024 National Junior Team Championships. The shared experience commemorated the past, present, and future of our community, giving young players a deep sense of pride and connection as they represent Auckland with the support of the tangata whenua of Tāmaki Makaurau.
The day began with a pōwhiri, where Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei formally welcomed ABA onto the Ōrākei Marae through an ancient ceremony involving whaikōrero (formal speech), waiata (singing), and kai (food). ABA General Manager, John McGregor, expressed, "We are honoured to engage with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei in a partnership that holds profound meaning for us all. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, with its rich cultural heritage and deep roots in Tāmaki Makaurau, brings to us a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and a perspective that enriches our journey.”
At the conclusion of the pōwhiri, with Ōrākei Marae now officially home to ABA, players and their whānau gathered for a special team naming and uniform presentation ceremony. Holding this event at Ōrākei Marae showcased the values of inclusivity and respect that both organizations hold dear, especially for the younger generations who will now represent Tāmaki Makaurau. The event was more than just a formality; it was a celebration of unity and a shared commitment to community well-being.
This collaboration aims to transcend the badminton courts, focusing on youth development, cultural exchange, and environmental stewardship. By working together, Auckland Badminton and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei aspire to create opportunities that benefit the wider community, fostering a spirit of mutual growth and understanding.
As the teams prepare for the championships, they do so with a sense of pride and optimism, knowing they are part of a broader mission to build bridges and strengthen community ties. This partnership symbolizes a future where sport transcends boundaries, bringing people together in a shared pursuit of excellence and unity.
