Girls Welcome Program for 2025 Launches

In a significant step towards promoting sports participation among young girls, Auckland Badminton (ABA) has launched its Girls Welcome Program for the 2024/2025 season. This initiative aims to boost female involvement in badminton, particularly for those who have not previously been part of an ABA representative squad.

The program is open to girls aged 10 to 16 in 2025 who were not part of any ABA rep squads during the 2024 season. Players do not need to apply for this program. Instead, ABA will directly contact eligible participants. The initiative is also extended to any girls who sign up for Term 3 of 2024, allowing them to participate in this trial opportunity.

"We believe that every girl should have the opportunity to engage in sports and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits that come with it," said Laura Lin (Coach). "This program is designed to break down barriers and provide a welcoming environment for young girls to explore their potential in badminton."

How It Works:

  1. Registration: Girls must register with ABA for 2025 and pay for the Te Kaha Squad, taking advantage of an early payment discount.

  2. Trial Process: During the first month of participation, girls will be trialled. If selected for one of the Te Kaha squads (Junior, Youth, or Aspiring), they will receive a full set of mandatory uniforms valued at $566, including:

    • ABA Jacket: $98
    • ABA Track Pants: $95
    • ABA Hoodie: $95
    • ABA Playing Shirts (3): $195
    • ABA Short/Skort: $55
    • ABA Socks (2 pairs): $28
  3. Additional Opportunities: Those selected for higher-level squads such as Development, Emerging, Performance, or Wisden will receive additional benefits totalling $2,266, including:

    • Proshop Credit worth $500.
    • Waived additional fees for the 2024/2025 season, valued at $1,300.

Participants who are selected for teams that travel, such as to Palmerston North, will be required to cover separate costs associated with the New Zealand Junior Team Championships (NZJTC).

"We're committed to making badminton accessible and enjoyable for all girls, regardless of their previous experience," added Tony Naidu.  "This program is a key part of our efforts to ensure that more girls have the chance to play, compete, and grow in a supportive environment."

The Girls Welcome Program is a pilot initiative for the 2024/2025 season, with the potential to expand based on its success. Through this effort, ABA hopes to foster a new generation of female athletes who are passionate about badminton and motivated to pursue their sporting dreams.
