New Grassroots Development Fund to Boost Club Growth and Inclusion

Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) is excited to announce the launch of the ABA Club Grassroots Development Fund, a new initiative for 2025 designed to support ABA-affiliated clubs in expanding grassroots programs that increase badminton participation, especially among underrepresented groups. This fund aligns with ABA’s mission to provide "Every Opportunity for Participation in Badminton," reinforcing its dedication to strengthening and growing the sport across Auckland.

Through this fund, clubs can apply for grants up to $3,000 to develop new programs targeting groups including Māori and Pasifika, women of all ages, juniors, Para-Badminton athletes, players over 60, and other minority or emerging communities in need of support. The fund also covers essential expenses such as coaching, equipment, venue hire, and marketing, with additional guidance available from ABA to help clubs plan and execute their initiatives.

How It Works
Applications will be accepted monthly, with submissions due by the 20th of each month from November 2024 through September 2025. Clubs interested in applying will need to outline their program goals and target groups. ABA will review applications and provide funding decisions by the 20th of the following month. This fund will only support new initiatives, ensuring fresh opportunities and innovations within Auckland’s badminton community.

Examples of Possible Initiatives
The fund is designed to encourage creative ideas that foster community growth, such as:

  • Para-Badminton Daytime Program: This is a six-week pilot program that engages local Para-Badminton players. It includes coaching, free equipment, and organised playtimes.
  • Junior After-School Badminton Program: This is a 9-week afterschool initiative targeting youth players. It aims to grow junior membership with free rackets and training sessions.

ABA’s Vision and Strategic Impact
Acting General Manager Tony Naidu emphasised the fund’s alignment with ABA’s commitment to strengthening badminton’s presence across Auckland. “We believe that supporting clubs to reach out and engage diverse groups will build a more inclusive badminton community. We aim to empower clubs to create lasting programs that resonate within their communities and encourage sustainable growth.”

With the ABA Club Grassroots Development Fund, ABA empowers clubs to increase membership, build stronger partnerships, and foster long-term sustainability for the sport. The fund underscores ABA’s dedication to delivering high-quality service and expanding badminton opportunities, bringing Auckland closer to becoming a badminton community that is diverse, vibrant, and accessible to all.
