Auckland Badminton Unveils Roadmap to Transform Gillies Avenue Hall

Auckland Badminton has officially released a comprehensive Facility Improvement Roadmap, setting a clear direction for upgrades to its flagship venue at 99 Gillies Avenue. The plan outlines a series of staged investments to address long-standing maintenance issues, improve functionality, and enhance the playing and visitor experience.

The Gilles Avenue hall—home to one of the busiest badminton hubs in New Zealand—has in recent years suffered from underinvestment in core infrastructure, with issues such as roof leaks affecting players and events. While some cosmetic improvements have been made, the Board of the Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) recognised the need for a more strategic, user-informed approach.

“This roadmap is about restoring pride in our venue,” said ABA General Manager Hamish Meacheam. “We’ve engaged with players, clubs, and coaches to understand their needs, and we’re committed to creating a facility that’s not only fit for purpose but a genuine standout in New Zealand badminton.”

To prioritise projects, ABA used a weighted scoring matrix that placed strong emphasis on health and safety and structural soundness, while also factoring in functionality and aesthetics. The most urgent priority is now being addressed—targeted roof repairs are underway to stop leaks and protect the integrity of the building.

Key Near-Term Projects

Several improvements are on the near-term horizon:

  • Pro Shop Expansion: Plans to enlarge the entrance area retail space and explore the addition of amenities such as a coffee machine.
  • Athlete Performance Centre: A basic gym is being developed in the former café area to support Auckland's top players with strength and conditioning resources.
  • Cosmetic Improvements: These will begin from the main entrance and work inward, enhancing shared spaces to create a more professional and welcoming environment. Landscaping work will follow in later stages.

Looking Ahead

Longer-term projects include upgrades to club management spaces, offices, and boardrooms, increased storage capacity, and eventually the renewal of playing court surfaces to ensure elite-standard practice and competition.

The roadmap is described as a “living document,” meaning it will evolve with time, funding, and continued feedback from stakeholders.

“We’re committed to making the Auckland Badminton Hall the best place to play and perform in New Zealand,” Hamish Meacheam added. “This is just the beginning.”
