Auckland Badminton Association Announces 2026 Coaching Team
The Auckland Badminton Association (ABA) is proud to announce our initial coaching team for the 2026 season.
Following significant changes to our pathways and performance programme in 2025, ABA has firmly shifted its focus toward quality, consistency, and athlete-first development - with a clear goal of re-establishing Auckland as New Zealand’s leading badminton association.
For 2026, we have brought together a high-quality, collaborative coaching group that works across our three squad levels: Foundation, Development / Performance and Elite. Our coaches operate within - and at times across - these programmes to ensure players experience a clear pathway, strong technical foundations, and progressive performance environments.
This integrated approach is supported by the strongest off-court team in the country, including dedicated physiotherapy support and specialised strength and conditioning programming.
It is this depth of expertise and collaboration that sets ABA apart - providing athletes with both continuity and exposure to a range of coaching strengths, all working toward the same high standards.
Henry Tam; Head Coach
Henry Tam leads ABA’s Performance Programme and Elite Squad, while also providing mentorship and strategic guidance across the wider coaching team.
Henry brings extensive high-performance coaching experience, with a strong focus on athlete development, programme structure, and building environments that consistently produce results. Known for his technical clarity, professionalism, and ability to connect with athletes, Henry plays a key role in shaping ABA’s long-term performance pathway. As a player, Henry reached a career high BWF ranking of 25 in Mixed Doubles, and represented New Zealand at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Under Henry’s leadership, the Performance Programme is centred on excellence, accountability, and preparing athletes for national and international competition.
Li Feng; Foundation Coach & Mentor Coach
Widely regarded as the most influential badminton coach in New Zealand’s history, Li Feng has made a lasting impact on the sport across generations.
A former international player for China who later represented New Zealand, Li Feng went on to serve as Head Coach of New Zealand, and previously led ABA during a period of national dominance. Over decades of coaching, she has mentored many of the country’s top athletes and helped shape some of New Zealand’s most successful badminton careers.
At ABA, Li Feng works alongside Rhona Bramwell to lead the Foundation Programme, focusing on the development of the next generation of international-level players. She also plays a vital mentoring role for both athletes and coaches, sharing her vast experience from the highest levels of the sport.
Zeck Li; Head Coach - Development
Zeck Li leads ABA’s Development Squad, working with athletes transitioning from Foundation into more advanced performance environments.
Trained within the Taiwanese badminton system where he was a top junior player, Zeck previously worked closely with Li Feng for a number of years, gaining experience with many athletes who have since become New Zealand representatives.
Known for his demanding but supportive training style, Zeck focuses on consolidating technical foundations while progressively introducing tactical complexity and time pressure. His sessions are high intensity, balanced with genuine care for the growth of each athlete.
Adam Jeffrey; Development & Performance Coach
The current Oceania Men’s Doubles Champion, Adam Jeffrey is a highly regarded coach and active international athlete.
Adam is a BWF Level 1 coach, known for his strong technical knowledge, deep understanding of doubles tactics, and his ability to translate real-world competitive experience into coaching environments.
Coaching across Foundation, Development, and Performance squads, Adam brings insight from his own journey - progressing from competitive junior to international representative - while continuing to compete as a member of the New Zealand Badminton Team.
Rhona Bramwell OLY; Foundation Coach
One of New Zealand’s greatest ever badminton players, Rhona Bramwell is a two-time Olympian and three-time Commonwealth Games medallist.
Rhona has coached professionally for many years and is widely respected as one of the country’s best technical coaches. Her work at ABA is focused within the Foundation Programme, identifying and supporting talented athletes aged 8–12, and building the technical skills and training habits required for long-term success.
Chance Cheng; Performance Coach
With a combined 28 years of experience on and off the court, Chance Cheng returns to ABA to work with emerging elite teenage athletes within the Performance Programme.
A BWF Level 1 coach, Chance has competed internationally since 2002 and remains highly competitive in Oceania, including finishing runner-up in Men’s Doubles at the 2023 Oceania Championships and reaching the semi-finals in 2025.
Chance runs his own private academy in Auckland and has produced numerous national champions across junior and senior levels - including current New Zealand Women’s Singles Champion Shaunna Li.
Daniel McMillan; Development & Performance Coach
A member of the Badminton New Zealand team, Daniel McMillan brings strong international experience and competitive success across both Singles and Mixed Doubles.
A former England Junior representative, Dan has competed extensively at international level and brings a global perspective to ABA’s Development and Performance Programmes. His ambition to see Auckland return to national dominance aligns strongly with the direction of the Association.
Dan’s coaching style is personable yet demanding, with a clear focus on maximising the quality and intent of every training session. He works closely with athletes to drive continuous improvement, technical sharpness, and competitive mindset.
Jonathan Curtin; Development & Performance Coach
A long-time New Zealand representative, Jonathan Curtin coaches across ABA’s Development and Performance Programmes while continuing to compete internationally.
Jono’s badminton journey - from missing out on national squads as a junior to becoming a successful international player - gives him strong insight into long-term athlete development, and supporting all players equally within a squad.
He has trained extensively across Asia in world-class environments and combines this experience with his BWF Level 1 coaching qualification to support athletes both technically and mentally.
Sally Fu; Player, Coach & Mentor
A former New Zealand Team member and national champion, Sally Fu is a full-time physiotherapist with Triumph Physio and remains highly competitive nationally in both singles and doubles.
At ABA, Sally supports athletes through a mix of coaching assistance and mentoring, helping young players navigate both performance demands and physical wellbeing.
Bowen Zhao; Future Stars & Foundation Coach
Bowen Zhao works at the entry point of ABA’s performance pathway, identifying and coaching young athletes in the Future Stars and Foundation Programmes.
A strong national-level player and trainee teacher, Bowen has spent many years working alongside Li Feng and Rhona Bramwell, developing his technical coaching skills. He is now a well-respected young coach known for his connection with younger athletes and strong fundamentals-based approach.
Mitch Joynt PLY; Strength & Conditioning Specialist
Paralympian Mitch Joynt leads ABA’s Strength and Conditioning Programme.
A professional sprinter and coach, Mitch specialises in speed, strength, and conditioning, with the goal of ensuring ABA athletes are among the fittest and most physically prepared in the country.
Known for his high standards and motivational style, Mitch delivers structured S&C programming across squads, pushing athletes to continually improve their physical performance.
Triumph Physiotherapy – Badminton Physiotherapy Specialists
A key part of ABA’s off-court support team is Dino, Sally, and the wider team at Triumph Physio.
As recognised badminton physiotherapy specialists, Triumph Physio provides heavily discounted - and in some cases free - treatment and injury management support for ABA squad athletes, ensuring players receive expert care to support training loads and long-term development.
Looking Ahead
With a large, experienced, and collaborative coaching team in place, ABA enters 2026 with a clear focus on delivering one of the strongest athlete pathways in New Zealand.
By combining world-class experience, proven development systems, and comprehensive off-court support, ABA is building an environment where athletes can thrive - from their first steps in the Foundation Programme through to high-performance competition.
This announcement represents the initial coaching team for 2026, with further additions and specialist roles to be confirmed and announced throughout the year as the programme continues to evolve.
We look forward to an exciting 2026 season ahead.
